Who the IT Residence Permit is for
Foreign IT employees, independent professionals considering the Georgian IE route, qualifying International Company management and families planning to move with the principal applicant.
- Four applicant profiles with different evidence
- at least two years of evidenced IT work or economic activity
- at least USD 25,000 equivalent in GEL of qualifying preceding-year income
- A current right-to-work review before filing
The short answer
Georgia’s temporary residence permit for a person employed in the field of information technologies is a dedicated three-year temporary residence route for qualifying IT employees, eligible Georgian individual entrepreneurs, certain International Company managers or representatives, and their qualifying family members. It is a residence permit, not a tax status.
We first identify the correct applicant profile, then check the work, income, right-to-work and lawful-stay evidence that belongs to that profile. This avoids translating or filing documents that do not answer the actual test.

Who qualifies for the dedicated IT residence permit
The official programme is a temporary residence permit for a person employed in the field of information technologies. It is available through four distinct profiles; the evidence test is not identical for all four.
- A foreign IT employee working in an eligible ISCO-08 code 25 occupation.
- A Georgian individual entrepreneur with Small Business Status carrying out an eligible IT economic activity.
- A person authorised to manage or represent an International Company operating in IT.
- Qualifying family members of the principal IT permit holder.
The experience, income and receipt tests must tell one story
An employee or qualifying IE normally needs at least two years of evidenced IT work or economic activity, at least USD 25,000 equivalent in GEL of qualifying preceding-year income, and at least two relevant receipts separated by at least 30 days.
Contracts, invoices, employer certificates, tax records and bank statements should identify the same work, counterparties and payment chronology. A job title or a bank balance alone does not establish qualifying IT activity.
- Map actual duties to ISCO-08 code 25, or actual IE activity to an accepted NACE code.
- Connect each qualifying receipt to the contract, invoice or payroll record that produced it.
- Resolve the right-to-work decision or code before residence filing where the current framework requires it.
Eligibility is tied to defined work—not to the word ‘tech’
The employee profile uses the ICT professional occupations under ISCO-08 code 25 and its accepted subcodes. The IE profile uses the listed Georgian economic activities: software publishing, computer programming and consultancy, facilities management, other IT services, data processing/hosting and web portals.
Product management, sales, design, general consulting and company ownership do not become qualifying IT activity merely because the client or employer is a technology business.
- Describe day-to-day duties, not only the commercial job title.
- Use the same activity in contracts, invoices, tax registration and the right-to-work file.
- Keep project, portfolio and counterparty evidence where it helps explain the professional record.
Check the right to work before the residence application
An employee normally proceeds through the Georgian employer, while a self-employed foreigner normally files personally. The right is specific to the approved employer and position or to the approved profession and economic activity.
Georgia changed the rules for foreign workers during 2026. We check the procedure in force when the case is prepared, including any exemption, instead of relying on an older article or programme summary.
- GEL 200 for the 30-calendar-day route; GEL 400 for the 10-working-day route.
- After approval, the D1 visa or residence step must be taken within the applicable statutory period.
- Changing employer, position or self-employed activity can require a new decision.
Plan the government clock only after the file is ready
The published government service options are GEL 500 for 90 calendar days or GEL 750 for 60 calendar days. The initial permit is generally an initial three-year period, with three-year extensions within the statutory maximum.
- an extension may be filed during the final 90 days before expiry and must be submitted before the permit expires
- absence from Georgia for 183 days or more in a continuous 12-month period may trigger termination, subject to the statutory treatment exception
- Foreign civil and professional documents may require apostille/legalisation and certified Georgian translation.
- Company registration, bank onboarding, tax status and residence remain separate decisions.

How this may look in a real case
A remote software developer first confirms whether the Georgian IE profile is realistic, then supplies the work history, last-year IT income and separated payment records needed for the residence file.
What can slow the process down
We check these points at the beginning and flag gaps before filing, so you can correct them while there is still time.
- The work history or income evidence does not clearly show qualifying IT work.
- The work-right step is started too late or under the wrong employee/self-employed route.
- Foreign documents reach Georgia without the required apostille, legalisation or usable translation.
- A change of employer, activity, lawful stay or travel plan is not checked before filing.

Frequently asked questions
Who can qualify for Georgia’s IT Residence Permit?
The permit has four profiles: qualifying IT employees, Georgian individual entrepreneurs who hold Small Business Status and carry out an accepted IT activity, persons authorised to manage or represent an International Company operating in IT, and qualifying family members of a principal IT permit holder. The evidence is not identical for every profile.
See the full eligibility guideCan a remote worker or contractor qualify for the IT Residence Permit?
Potentially. A contractor first needs to establish which applicant category applies. For the Georgian individual-entrepreneur route, IE registration, Small Business Status, an accepted IT activity, the experience and income evidence, and the current work-right position all need to be checked. A foreign contract alone does not create residence eligibility.
IT permit for freelancers and contractorsDo IT employees and individual entrepreneurs use the same evidence?
They share the two-year IT experience or activity test and the preceding-year income and payment tests, but they prove their working basis differently. Employees rely on the qualifying occupation and employer records; an IE must also prove Georgian IE registration, Small Business Status and an accepted IT economic activity.
How much IT experience is required?
The employee and qualifying IE profiles require at least two years in total of relevant IT work or economic activity. Contracts, employer certificates, tax records, invoices, project records and other evidence may be used according to the applicant’s working history.
What is the USD 25,000 income requirement?
For the employee and qualifying IE profiles, the applicant must show at least USD 25,000 equivalent in GEL received from qualifying IT work or economic activity during the last year. The evidence must also show at least two receipts separated by at least 30 days.
Which IT jobs and activities qualify?
Employees are assessed under the accepted ISCO-08 code 25 ICT occupations. The IE profile uses the listed Georgian activity codes for software publishing, programming, IT consultancy and facilities management, other IT services, data processing and hosting, and web portals. Actual duties and revenue-generating work matter more than a commercial job title.
Eligible IT professionsDo I need a Georgian right to work before the IT Residence Permit?
The current procedure generally requires the principal employee, qualifying IE or International Company manager to hold the Georgian right to work, unless a current exemption applies and the residence rules allow that route. We check the rules in force when the case is prepared because the labour-migration procedure changed during 2026.
Right to work in GeorgiaDoes opening a Georgian company make me eligible for IT residence?
No. Company ownership by itself is not one of the IT permit profiles. A founder may qualify through a genuine employee profile, an eligible Georgian IE profile, or as an authorised manager or representative of an International Company operating in IT, provided the applicable conditions are met.
Does foreign-source income count for the IT Residence Permit?
Income can be relevant if it is properly evidenced and comes from qualifying IT work under the applicable profile. That immigration evidence question is separate from whether the income is Georgian-source, taxable in Georgia, eligible for Small Business treatment or subject to VAT analysis.
Tax for IT professionalsHow long does the IT Residence Permit process take and what are the government fees?
The published government services are GEL 500 for a decision on the 90th calendar day and GEL 750 for a decision on the 60th calendar day. Document preparation, work-right steps, translations and any additional-document request are separate from that government processing period.
Fees and timelinesHow long is the IT Residence Permit valid?
The initial IT permit is issued for three years. It may be extended in further three-year periods, subject to continued eligibility, up to the statutory total limit. The permit can also be affected by the specific absence rule and changes to the qualifying basis.
When should I renew an IT Residence Permit?
An extension application may be filed during the final 90 days before expiry and must be submitted before the permit expires. Begin the evidence review earlier so there is time to address a changed employer, activity, work-right position, travel history or family file.
IT permit renewalWhat happens if I change employer or business activity?
A right-to-work decision is linked to the approved employer and position or to the approved self-employed profession and activity. A change may require a new work-right decision and can affect the residence basis, so it should be reviewed before the new arrangement starts.
Does the IT Residence Permit make me a Georgian tax resident?
No. Immigration residence and personal tax residence are separate. Tax residence normally depends on the Tax Code and the person’s actual facts, including presence and any applicable special rule or treaty.
Can my spouse and children obtain residence through my IT permit?
Qualifying family members can use the linked IT family route. Their documents can be prepared while the principal case is pending, but the official family checklist requires a copy of the principal holder’s IT residence permit, so the family filing normally follows the principal decision.
Family reunification for IT permit holdersCan ITResidency.ge assess my case before I pay for translations?
Yes. Send your passport, work model, short description of your IT activity, experience evidence, last-year income information, current Georgian registrations and family details. We can identify the likely profile and the main gaps before a full translation or filing budget is committed.
